Despite the June ‘heat dome’ where the Pacific Northwest experienced extreme temperatures of 117° F for three days, the rest of the 2021 growing season in Oregon’s Willamette Valley was warm, and not hot, which seems to have laid the framework for a new classic vintage from the region. Low yields produced concentrated red wines with fine tannins and whites of great freshness sure to become age-worthy collectibles. The combination of the drought and heat on our young vines resulted in tiny berries and lower-than-normal grape clusters. Despite the young age of the vines, they responded remarkably well giving densely concentrated fruit flavors, firm and fine tannins, and retained their acidity and freshness despite the conditions. These wines, while produced in miniscule quantities, are without doubt some of the most cellar-worthy examples we have ever seen out of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. The unique Bellpine soils, combined with the ever-present afternoon coastal winds, seem to be a recipe for intensity of fruit and structure in all of the varieties grown on this small hilltop. We couldn't be more excited to share the wines from this site and to continue shepherding the wines from these vines in the promising vintages to come.
Due to the intensity of the raw materials and the promise that the fermented liquids hold, we cellar our wines for an extended period in bottle before release. The point is not to increase oxidative elevage in oak vessel but to harness the energy of the wine and allow its power to integrate in a cool, reductive cellar environment, resolving and harmonizing the tannins and acidity so the wine is powerful yet expressive on release. Upon soil analysis of this site, we intended to set out to create an iconic site considering all elements, the architecture of the vine rows, the selection of unique best-suited varietal and clonal selections. Combined with the protection of the natural habitat, this has resulted, so far, in memorable wines that deserve time and cellaring. We are harvesting small amounts each year. As each variety comes into production and the vines mature, our offerings will expand and increase to a degree, but will always remain relatively limited in volume. We believe these wines are essential to the ongoing varietal conversation across the Yamhill-Carlton AVA and the greater Willamette Valley.
2021 Vintage Overview
Descriptions of Our 2021 Wines
2021 Aligoté. Our Aligoté is produced from a very rare and special clone called Aligoté Doré. This particular selection is low-yielding by nature of its small cluster and tiny berry size. In addition, the grape skins color to a beautiful deep gold with chalky tannins. These factors combine to produce a wine more powerful in flavor, aroma, and structure compared to a typical example from Europe. Unlike the flavors of its Burgundian sibling, Chardonnay, the wine stays in this intense citrus and green apple realm that makes it identifiable and distinctly unique. There is also more acidity and tannin built into this wine which creates more tension on the palate with enhanced saline and mineral notes. Fermented and aged for 10 months in neutral French oak barrels, then transferred with lees to stainless steel drums for another 8 months before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.
2021 Chenin Blanc. Our Chenin Blanc is produced with a unique clone that made its way to the United States from the Loire Valley in France. Chosen for its small cluster and low-yielding nature, we intend to produce a powerful, dry style of wine that is high in extract and could age for decades. Due to the late ripening nature of Chenin Blanc in the Willamette Valley, we don’t shy away from long hang time on the vine to develop deep flavors of honey suckle, lanolin, straw, and dessert apples. In contrast to the Aligote’s green and platinum flavor spectrum, the Chenin feels very golden with great opulence. Fermented completely dry in neutral French oak barrels followed by 10 months of aging before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.
2021 Gamay Noir. Our Gamay Noir is produced with a special clonal selection from the Morgon region in Beaujolais. Selected from Cru vineyards, this clone was chosen for premium production farming and winemaking. We chose to head train the vines which is unheard of in the Willamette Valley. By training the vines in this method, the fruiting zone hangs 360 degrees circling the vine. This is important to expose the fruit to all aspects of the sun collecting a spectrum of flavors from morning and evening sun exposure. The fruit sees extra light this way which produces thick skins with concentrated tannins and color. The wines produced are full in every kind of way showing ample body, structure, fruit concentration, and a firm acid backbone to hold it all together. Fermented and aged in neutral French oak for 10 months before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.
